GOUGH WHITLAM REMEMBERED

Whitlam  addressing enthusiastic  meeting in  Darwin's Greek Hall in support of  Jock Nelson who stood down  as  NT Administrator  to  contest  the Territory seat  in the  House  of  Representatives  after  the  dismissal . Nelson , viewed from behind, is the person in  the centre  foreground . To his right  is  Territory  ALP identity , John Waters , Q.C. , occasionally  seen  nowadays  at  the Friday Club in the Noodle  House . It  is  not certain, but  the other person  seated on  stage  could  be Whitlam's speech  writer,  Graham  Freudenberg
During  research  into  the  life  of  the late  NT Crusading Editor , " Big  Jim" Bowditch, this writer  contacted  Whitlam's  office in Sydney  seeking  specific  information  about  Bowditch's  contact  with   him  in   Darwin.  Bowditch  had  said  he  had discussed  with  Whitlam  the  need  for  the  ALP to  have its own  national  paper  to get its  messages and policies , in  detail,   across   to  the   public.   Gough  rang  me  back in South Australia  and  confirmed  that Bowditch  had  indeed  discussed  the   subject   with  him ;  it  was  desirable,  he added,  that  the  life   of   Bowditch , for whom he  had admiration ,  be  made   known ...
