The relentless search for offbeat ephemera turned up this circa 1930s yellowed and creased handwritten personal advice on how to
improve singing from
The Bertram Flohm School of Speech
Training , Sydney.
It was discovered in South Townsville’s always interesting Ross McCartin’s auctions and secondhand furniture emporium , which has been running for nigh on 40 years , an unsung jewel in the crown of the city . It contains a large range of furniture , some books, pictures , carvings, oddities , hidden treasures .
Two bookshelves on wheels were recently bought from there by this
blog in
a bid to get boxes of books out from under
the
bed and elsewhere .
Back to the Bertram Flohm singing instructions . The letterhead states he was
president of the Society of Elocutionists , Adjudicators in Elocution at the leading Eisteddfods in the Commonwealth of Australia and the
Dominion of New Zealand. An advertisement in February 1930
stated he had resumed tuition for stage,
talkies and musical monologues . In
February 1936, Frohm ,described as a
lecturer in speech training at St.
Andrews College, Sydney University, went to Toowoomba to adjudicate at the
Queensland Eisteddfod .
Unfortunately not for sale at Ross
McCartins was the
above souped up Chevrolet, possibly previously owned by North Queensland's answer to the leadfooted little old lady from Pasadena ,Townsville on the V8 racing circuit .
