FROM BANK TO AFRICAN BOOZER

The rundown  once  grand art deco Commonwealth  Bank at the corner of Bennett and Smith Street, Darwin,  has been  turned into an attractively revamped  pub called Rorkes, with an outdoor beer garden in a courtyard at the rear . Upstairs is a nightclub.  There  had been a Rorke's Drift bar and  café in  the Mitchell Street nightclub  precinct. Another part of the building is given over to medical services of some kind where  presumably one  can  get treatment after  a close encounter with  a  Zulu wielding  a  pointy  assegai .
The  bank  ,which survived the Japanese bombing , in palmier days .
