Broaching whales, some with calves, have been sighted in the Townsville region of North Queensland , thrilling passengers on ferries plying between the city and Magnetic Island . Armed with a camera and a feather duster , Little Darwin went on a whale hunting safari on Magnetic Island and landed an unusual mounted and carved whale , nearly 50 years old , which had been beached on a shelf for many years .
The base states it is a Black Finback Whale , dated Easter 1968, the carver Bruce John Daldy-Rowe .
